Salim Mehajer is an infamous Australian born businessman turned politician and convicted felon. He made most of his fortune as a freelance property developer, but became very prominent in Australia and beyond due to his extravagant lifestyle. He served on the Auburn City Council and was eventually elected acting mayor.

However, Mehajer hasn’t had it well in recent years both in his business and in his political career. He was declared bankrupt in March 2018 and a month later was sentenced to 21 months in prison after being found guilty of election fraud.

Salim Mehajer Biography (Age)

Salim Mehajer was born on June 12, 1986. He was born and raised in the Auburn area, west of Sydney, where he attended primary school and part of his secondary education. After graduating from Arthur Phillip Secondary School in Parramatta, he entered Western Sydney University where he completed a bachelor’s degree in housing.

In the 2011 New South Wales state election, Mehajer stood as an independent candidate to represent the constituency of Auburn in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Although he was unsuccessful at this first attempt, he was very successful when he ran for another position the following year. He was elected as an independent councilor for the city of Auburn in 2012, then acting mayor of the city.

Salim Mehajer first found himself in troubled waters in 2014 when he was found guilty of failing to properly disclose his pecuniary interests. This earned him a one-month suspension from civic duties. At the end of 2015, he was again found guilty of non-disclosure of financial interests, which earned him a 4-month suspension, which was finally overturned in February 2016. Coincidentally, the city council of Auburn was also suspended in February 2016, abruptly ending Mehajer’s tenure as deputy mayor.

Although his tenure in political office was over, Mehajer’s court battles were far from over. His troubles came to a head in June 2017 when he was charged with more than 100 voter fraud offenses he committed alongside one of his sisters, Fatima, during his tenure as deputy mayor. His sister pleaded guilty to 77 counts and in June 2018, after a lengthy trial, Mehajer was sentenced to 21 months with an 11-month non-release period. Her sister Fatima received a two-month suspended prison sentence for her role in the scam.

His Wife, Siblings and Family Life

Beyond the controversies of his political career, Salim Mehajer is well known for his highly publicized marriage to his longtime girlfriend, Aysha (born April Amelia Learmonth). She was a beautician before she met Mehajer in 2008, and after they started dating she quit her job and joined him in the real estate business. She also converted to Islam and her name was changed from April to Aysha.

The couple’s whirlwind romance culminated in a very lavish wedding ceremony that took place on August 15, 2015. However, their marriage hit the rocks after just 6 months. Their divorce was finalized in March 2018.

Salim Mehajer’s mother Amal and his father Mohamed Mehajer are both from Lebanon. He is the third of his parents’ eight children. He has a brother Khaled and 6 sisters; Fatima, Miriam, Aiisha, Zenna, Khadijah and Sanna.

Apparently, Salim is not the only member of his family who has had serious problems with the law. His parents were found guilty of failing to pay up to $10 million in taxes. His father was also found guilty of a corruption and fraud scandal involving the Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) banking group.

The exact net worth of Salim Mehajer is currently unknown however, the controversial politician and business developer is known to have struggled financially when it comes to his finances. Almost all of his businesses have failed and he owes the Australian tax office a lot. Consequently, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (AISC) prohibited Mehajer from managing a joint stock company for 3 years from August 2016. His financial crisis peaked on March 20, 2018, when at which time he was declared bankrupt by a federal judge and as a result, an administrator was appointed to manage his assets.
